BEN RENTAL • PRACTICAL CRETE GUIDE

How to drive in Crete with confidence

Crete is best explored at your own pace. Its roads reward calm, attentive driving: slow down for bends, give yourself time in villages, and let the island set the rhythm.

CRETE, AT YOUR PACE

The simple rule: drive for the road in front of you

A coastal highway, a quiet olive-grove lane and a mountain descent can feel like three different journeys. Do not treat local confidence as a speed target. Choose a pace that lets you read the road, the signs and the space around you.

Plan the route, not just the destination

Check the route before leaving. A short distance on the map can include bends, villages or slower sections.

Leave room for the unexpected

Look well ahead for a tight curve, a parked car, a scooter, goats, loose stones or a vehicle coming wide around a bend.

Let faster traffic go safely

Keep a steady line, use a safe place to allow a faster vehicle through, and never feel pressured into a risky manoeuvre.

READY TO LEAVE

Before you set off

Take two minutes before leaving the pickup point. It makes the first kilometres much more relaxed, especially if you have just arrived after a flight.

  • Set navigation before moving and download your route if you expect weak signal in rural areas.
  • Adjust mirrors, seat and air conditioning; secure bags so nothing moves under the pedals.
  • Ask your Ben Rental team about the journey you have planned and choose a vehicle that suits your passengers, luggage and roads.
  • Keep water, sunglasses and your phone charged; bright sun can make signs and bends harder to read.

A CALMER EVENING

After sunset: make the plan easier

Rural roads may have limited lighting and familiar scenery looks different after dark. If a long dinner or a wine tasting is part of the plan, decide in advance who will not drink, use a taxi, or stay nearby. Never drive after alcohol or drugs. The Greek road-safety authorities emphasise seatbelts, sober driving, proper overtaking and respect for signs.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Safety essentials in Greece

  • Traffic signs and traffic-police directions always take priority; come to a complete stop at STOP signs and yield where required.
  • Everyone in the vehicle should wear a seatbelt. Children should travel in the rear and be properly secured.
  • Do not use the motorway emergency lane except in an emergency.
  • The official EU guidance lists a lower alcohol threshold for novice and professional drivers than for most other drivers. The safest holiday rule is simple: if you are driving, do not drink.

MAKE SPACE

Stopping, parking and taking photos

Choose a legal, visible place to stop rather than braking suddenly for a viewpoint. In villages, keep access clear for residents, delivery vehicles and emergency services. On narrow mountain roads, do not stop in a bend or on the crest of a hill. A beautiful view is worth a short walk from a safe parking place.
